Room Darkening VS Blackout

As you consider upgrading the light control in your home, you may come across the terms blackout and room darkening. We often say blackout blinds for rooms where you’d like the light completely blocked, using specialty fabrics and innovative features so 99% of the light is blocked–even on a bright day. When discussing room darkening blinds, that’s the experience of “most” of the light being prevented, but still being able to see around the room during the day when the window shades are closed. Much of the entering light is blocked, but there can still be slivers of light visible.

Dual Shades

Dual shades has improved the experience of room darkening window shades. We call it our “best of both worlds” light control. You can enjoy light filtering and outdoor views through the front shade, which operates independently of the second, even though they share the same headrail. When you want to increase control, the secondary blackout roller shade lowers into place.

Light Gaps

Light gaps can be described as the slivers of light that are visible when the room darkening blinds are closed on the bright day. A number of reasons can be responsible for side light gaps. Certain products can reduce the light gaps, and your window covering specialist can guide you to the ones that work best for your windows. The mounting of the blackout shades, whether inside or outside mounted can affect the side light gaps. Additional features can improve the experience, such as LightLock, which fits U-shaped channels into the window frame, guiding the edges of the window shades as they raise and lower. This helps seal out the light, offering 99% darkness.
