Child safe window coverings are an important improvement to make in your home where children live or visit. Night & Day Decor wants to bring attention to the potential hazards of dated window treatments and dangling cords. Cord Regulations
Standards are in place to prevent risk of injury to small children. Details of the Corded Window Coverings Regulations can be found here on the Justice Laws Website. Below is a snapshot of the guidelines for “reachable” and “unreachable” cords.
Reachable: “A reachable cord with one free end must not exceed 22 cm in length when it is pulled in any direction.”

Unreachable: “A cord that is not reachable must remain so, whether the corded window covering is fully opened, fully closed or in any position in between, throughout the useful life of the corded window covering.”
Do You Have Blind Cords?
For decades, shades have been fitted with dangling cords. It’s no surprise that many homeowners still have them in their homes. How does this play out with children in the home? Isn’t it time to consider an alternative?
- Long, tangled cords are often wound up, tied and thrown to the top of the window.
- Blinds no longer function beyond the position they were left in.
- If children eventually get access to those cords, the significant dangers still exist.
Cordless: One Way to Go
Years ago, Hunter Douglas began focusing on child safety and made it a top priority for all of their products. Since then, cordless blinds have become the norm and are readily available to fit your budget and lifestyle. There are many style options, too.

Let’s review a few of our favorite cordless options that keep pets and children safe and are becoming the standard in homes today.
LiteRise
ith just a simple push, Cordless LiteRise is a fantastic option for a child’s room. The treatments adjust up or down, allowing your child to safely adjust on their own. This system provides simple movement that stays in place for ease, convenience and safety.

Automation
Cords are no longer in the way with automated blinds! With ‘touch of a button’ technology, the ease and convenience of everyday operation will exceed expectations. The best part? Your child can teach you how to operate your automated shades on your favorite device. For an elevated look and function, smart shades are the “it” product.

Soft Touch Wand Motorization
Our Soft Touch motorized wand system allows you individual control for each window. A slim, lightweight wand hangs down, with a gentle tap up or down to operate. Even small hands can reach and as soon as they pull too hard, the wand removes itself–held in place by a strong magnet. Hunter Douglas has thought of everything.

Cordless Shutters
Yes, shutters are cordless. That makes them the obvious choice for child safety. But, Hunter Douglas took child safety to an extra level of precaution for children. In the event that a child may fall against the window, the shutters won’t hyper-extend to open through the window. Durability and strength are combined for a top-notch result.

Cord Safe: Another Safe Option
Sometimes cordless blinds are just not feasible. It may be a height issue or a hard-to-reach place. No worries. Cord Safe blinds are here to save the day! We know blind cords are a huge concern. We’ve got child-safe choices that meet safety standards.
UltraGlide
In this case, a retractable cord does the trick. The cord never extends itself after your adjustment. You pull on the short, retractable cord at the top of your window treatments, and it automatically goes back into place. This cord stays out of the way, resistant to danger.
