Roman shades have been a favorite window covering for generations, and it’s easy to understand why. Their soft fabric folds, beautiful textures and timeless appeal bring style to almost any room. From natural woven materials to modern rolling designs and custom fabrics, today’s Roman shades offer more choices than ever.
But what are the best Roman shades for your home? Whether you’re looking for natural texture, a clean contemporary finish or a custom fabric that reflects your personal style, let’s explore three popular options and what makes each one special.
Natural Texture: Woven Roman Shades
One design trend that’s not going anywhere soon? Texture. From natural materials to organic fibers, adding texture creates warmth, dimension and visual interest. Woven Roman-style shades are a beautiful way to bring these elements to your windows.
Natural woven shades are crafted from materials such as bamboo, grasses, reeds and wood. Their unique weaves and patterns create an organic look that pairs beautifully with wood furniture, neutral fabrics and contemporary or traditional interiors.
Hunter Douglas Provenance® Woven Wood Shades offer a beautiful selection of natural materials and woven textures. Depending on the fabric and design, optional liners can provide additional privacy and light control.
For homeowners who love a more refined interpretation of woven texture, Alustra® Woven Textures™ offers sophisticated materials and patterns that bring a distinctive finish to the window.
These textured window treatments are particularly well suited to living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and home offices where natural materials can become part of the overall design.
Modern Rolling Roman Shades
It’s true. We have Romans that roll! Traditional Roman shades gather into folds as they rise, but modern innovations offer another way to enjoy this classic look. Hunter Douglas Vignette® Modern Roman Shades combine the soft appearance of Roman folds with contemporary operating systems. Depending on the style selected, the fabric can roll into the headrail or stack neatly when raised.
Vignette shades offer several features that make them a favorite for homeowners who want modern convenience without sacrificing traditional style:
- Consistent fabric folds: A tailored appearance that looks beautiful whether the shades are raised or lowered.
- No exposed rear cords: A clean design without the visible cords found on some traditional Roman shades.
- Light-filtering and room-darkening options: Choose the amount of light control that works best for your space.
- Dual-shade options: Select configurations that combine different levels of light control at one window.
- Convenient operation: Available operating systems include cordless and compatible motorized options.
Modern rolling Roman shades are especially appealing in bedrooms, living rooms and spaces where you want soft fabric styling with a streamlined finish.
Custom Fabric Roman Shades: Patterns, Prints & Colors
For a truly personalized look, custom fabric Roman shades offer endless possibilities. From subtle linen-inspired textures to bold patterns, colorful prints and luxurious fabrics, these shades can become a beautiful design feature in any room. Traditional Roman shades gather into soft folds when raised, creating dimension and charm at the window. Depending on the style, you can choose a more structured, tailored appearance or a softer, fuller fold.
Custom fabrics also allow you to coordinate Roman shades with upholstery, pillows, wallpaper and other elements of your interior design.
Layering Roman shades with decorative drapery panels is another beautiful way to add softness, texture and visual interest while creating a more complete window treatment design.
Which Roman Shade Style Is Best for Your Home?
The best Roman shades depend on the look you love and how you need your windows to function. Here’s a quick comparison of the three styles.
| Roman Shade Style | Best Features | Ideal Spaces |
|---|---|---|
| Woven Roman-Style Shades | Natural texture, organic materials and warm finishes | Living rooms, dining rooms and home offices |
| Modern Rolling Roman Shades | Consistent folds, streamlined operation and versatile light control | Bedrooms, living rooms and contemporary interiors |
| Custom Fabric Roman Shades | Personalized fabrics, patterns, colors and decorative styling | Bedrooms, dining rooms and virtually any room |
Choosing Roman Shades for Privacy & Light Control
Appearance is important, but the best Roman shades should also work for the way you use your space.
Light-filtering Roman shades soften incoming sunlight and create a comfortable atmosphere while allowing natural light into the room. They are a beautiful choice for living rooms, dining rooms and spaces where you want a bright, inviting feel.
Room-darkening Roman shades reduce incoming light for greater privacy and comfort. They’re especially useful in bedrooms, guest rooms and other spaces where controlling sunlight is a priority.
Keep in mind that room-darkening fabric doesn’t necessarily eliminate all light. Depending on the shade design and installation, light may still enter around the edges. Explore our room-darkening window treatment solutions for more ways to create a darker, more comfortable space.
Are Roman Shades a Good Choice for Large Windows?
Roman shades can look beautiful on larger windows, but the right design depends on the window dimensions, fabric weight and operating system. Multiple shades may be a better choice than one oversized treatment, particularly when you want flexible light control. For tall or hard-to-reach windows, compatible motorized Roman shades can make everyday operation more convenient.
During your design consultation, our team can help you determine whether traditional fabric Romans, modern rolling shades or another window treatment will work best for your window size and layout.
